Part 2: Unraveling the Curse of Death:
As far back as Lake could remember, his mind had always been buzzing with ideas, always thinking and wondering - especially about Science.
He has focused a lot of his formal education and studies on chemistry and electricity; he had even gained somewhat of a reputation as a pioneer in those fields. But by the age 21, Lake had redirected his studies and become a Methodist minister. With that, he began aiming his tireless curiosity at the supernatural power at the supernatural power of God - and how it connected to the natural realm.
So, for Lake's curious and scientific mind, it wasn't enough to just to know that God healed, he had to know how.
The answer to "How?" started coming when God began uncovering all the sickness and death that had bound Lake's family for 32 years...
In February 1981, Lake married Jennie Stevens of Newsberry, Michigan. They adored each other and eventually had seven children. But less than five years into their marriage, several well-known physicians diagnosed Jennie with tuberculosis and an incurable heart disease. Soon after that, she became an invalid. Sorrow was back - and it didn't let up.
At the doctor's recommendation, Lake moved his young family back to Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, where he had grown up as a teenager. The northern climate was supposed to ease his wife's condition. But for Lake, it seemed that nothing could ease the rising grief, which had nearly reached flood stage.
Again, Lake was surrounded by death and disease - an invalid brother; a sister dying from breast cancer; another sister slowly bleeding to death and now... his dear Jennie. He stood by helplessly. Where was his strong man's gospel? And was it strong enough to hold back this tide of oppression?
More desperate than before, Lake fell back on what had worked for him in the past - Dowie's Healing Home in Chicago.
Lake and his family decided their brother would be the first. He had been an invalid for 22 years, so they carefully loaded him up and took him to Chicago. In a matter of just moments after healing ministers laid their hands on him, he was healed - he got up and walked out!
Next, the Lakes took their 34-year-old sister who was dying from breast cancer. She had been operated on five times and had to be carried on a stretcher. She too was healed!
Then there was the sister who was bleeding to death. Her case was perhaps more trying for Lake because, being only about a year apart in age, they had grown up especially close to each other.
One night, Lake's phone rang - it was his mother. She was calling to let him know that his sister was nearly dead, and that if he wanted to see her alive, he'd have to hurry. When he arrived, she was unconscious and had no pulse. Now what could he do? Lake wrestled deep within his soul.
And then it came to him!
He rushed a telegram to Dowie in Chicago. The message read: "My sister has apparently died, but my spirit will not let her go. I believe if you will pray, God will heal her."
Dowie's reply came: "Hold on to God. I am praying. She will live." And she did! Within the hour, the whole family rejoiced - another Lake had been snatched from death!
That left only Jennie.
As I read this story of his life, I'm just amazed at the amazing power of God, healing diseases without any difficulty at all. A question rose in my heart as I read this though - why were Dowie's healing ministers able to be a channel of God's power so easily. Although the story did not elaborate on their background, I'm sure they must have invested much time in prayer and intercession before such miracles could occur so easily. In our context and lives, what will it take for us to experience God's power like that? Think about it...

Part 1: God's lightning rod
John G. Lake's struggle for life began the day he was born - March 18, 1870.
Born in Canada, Lake was one of 16 children. And like many of his brothers and sisters, he grew up with a strange digestive disease that nearly killed him. For nine years he suffered with the disease and the unpleasant treatments that were necessary to keep him alive.
While Lake managed to somehow survive, eight of his siblings didn't. One by one they died and funerals, tears and grief eventually overshadowed his childhood. Lake's memories were filled with the cries of his parents.
All this heartache only made Lake more painfully and keenly aware of the fact that sickness was something bad, something evil. In all his life he never saw any good come out of it. As Lake grew older this overexposure to sickness and sorrow sparked in him a rare and intense desire for the power of God. It was this driving passion that would not let John G. Lake rest until he had found a way to beat sickness, disease... and even death itself.
In the church where he grew up, miracles and supernatural healing never seemed much of an option. If anything, the church people to whom he looked for help spent a lot of time trying to convince him that God meant life's traumas and tragedies for his good. Somehow, Lake could never quite see the good for all the suffering around him. So he kept looking for his miracle.
At age 16, Lake moved with his family to the United States and it was there that he was saved as a result of a Salvation Army meeting and joined the Methodist Church. But still, sickness would not loosen its death grip on Lake and his family.
Finally, he could wait no longer - something had to be done. And it looked like it would be up to him to do it. He later wrote, "There was nobody to pray for me... As I sat alone, I said, ' Lord, I am finished with the world and the flesh, with the doctor and with the devil. From today, I lean on the arm of God.'"
At that moment, there was no evident sign of healing or any other manifestation of God's power in his body. Yet, one thing was certain, Lake had consecrated himself to God. And though it may not have looked like it on the outside, he knew on the inside that the disease was gone. He was that determined.
As Lake grew to be a young man, he suffered yet another ailment. Rheumatism was causing his legs to grow out of shape and distort his body.
Again, his church couldn't offer him the results that he passionately sought. His pastor told him, "Brother, you are glorifying God." Other church people said, "Brother, be patient and endure it." And for a while, Lake believed them - but he was still deformed. What Good News was there in that? Where was the powerful gospen that had been able to save him?
What Lake really wanted was another miracle. So again, his heart stretched out toward God. As he did, a flash of truth pierced the deception of his mind, and in the light of God's Word, Lake caught a glimpse of God's will.
"I discovered that [disease] was not the will of God at all, but the will of the dirty, crooked-legged devil that wanted to make me like himself.
Laying down everything, Lake went to Alexander Dowie in Chicago and there the power of God surged through his body and straightened his legs. Lake caught hold of the power of God, and the fact that Christianity is "a strong man's gospel." For the first time he saw how God wanted a race of people who are bold, strong, pure, good and blessed. He saw how the signs and wonders of the New Testament were meant for his day - and every day!
John Lake left Chicago healed. He also left with a bold gospel that declared healing for everyone - even the unsaved and the unchurched.
Though Lake had been born a sickly child in the 20th century as a lightning rod stretched between heaven and earth, just waiting to be struck by the very "lightning of God," as he later called it. And with each release of God's powerthat eventually charged his life, Lake in turn electrified the modern world.
As I read this short life story of John G. Lake, it really stirred something in my heart, inspiring me to go read more about the great revivalists of the past, to see what was it in their lives that made the difference. This is especially impacting to me because of my personal life experience that I'm going through at the moment.
Here's something to think about: What about you today? Do you dare to make the same consecration that Lake made to Christ as a kid, and mean it as much as he did? I'm really challenged to make such a commitment myself even though when you really think about it, it is something so basic, something so simple, yet it changed his entire life forever. You will read more about him as I post more in future.

A Short Testimony from Ivan!!
Youth Camp ‘07
"In retrospect, the camp was simply a divine set up by God, everything from the games to the sessions to the food, was all because of Him. Furthermore, this setup was all part of God’s plan for us to really receive something from the Him during the camp. I personally had not postured my heart to receive from God, as my prayer for this camp was that the youth, especially the newer ones, would get that encounter with God. However during the final night session, the presence of God was so tangible in that room, and I felt God’s call on my life again, a call for sacrifice and greater devotion to Him. I know that many of us answered the same call; to serve the Lord in full time ministry, and let me encourage you, let that call be fulfilled. We don’t know what the future holds, but God does. Trust Him completely to be our provider and strength through all the tough times. Of course, after a wonderful encounter with the Lord during the camp, many challenges and trails may suddenly come our way. I’m facing a few right now, but I’m certain of one truth, that Christ in me is the hope of Glory. That is enough to keep me going. Since the camp, I’ve already seen God’s supernatural hand acting in my life and I pray each day that we can be a more effective tool in God’s hands."
PS: On another note, I’d like to thank all of you guys who came down to support my family and I at my aunt’s funeral. It was really such an encouraging sight to see all you guys there. One of my aunts’ even commented that she was very impressed with the youth from HMI as they were very respectful and supportive towards the family. So a big thank you to you all.

The Youth Leader speaks:
Like many of you people who had experienced God at the recent youth camp, I too had my life turned right side up in a youth camp many years ago. I can still vividly remember that almost 12 years ago, I was at one of the back rows of the youth camp meeting and while worship was going on, I was just being my usual skeptical self as I saw the people in front of me being touched by the presence of God. At that moment, I challenged God and said, “God if you are REAL, show me!” In my heart I heard a small still voice that urged me to go up in front and lift up my hands in worship. No harm doing that I thought, and so I did. Little did I know that my life was never going to be the same again. As I look back, that was my moment of destiny. I made my way through the crowd, went to the front and for the first time in my life, I lift my hands, closed my eyes and began to worship Him. . And just as I did that, God touched me. It was as though an electric current hit me and I fell to my knees, crying laughing and repenting before God. His power and presence was so real and tangible it was as though I plugged my fingers into the electrical power point. From that day, my life was never the same. I had my real encounter with the power of God in a youth camp. I can still vividly remember that day when my life was forever changed and I realized that Jesus Christ is not just a character in the Bible, or a little fairy tale that I got so familiar in during Sunday school.
BUT……. Where do we go from here?
Many of you answered the altar call on the last night to lay down your lives and to serve God in full-time ministry. I want to encourage you guys/gals to do something about it. Don’t just answer an altar call, do something about your life TODAY! Learn a skill that is useful in ministry. Perhaps it’s learning how to be a good counselor, or to go practice your singing or musical ability if you want to serve God in the worship team. Read the WORD, know your Bible like it’s your best friend! Imagine if one day God gives you the platform to preach but the only story you know is about Adam and Eve. I mean you can preach about Adam and Eve, but you can’t preach about them EVERY WEEK!! Have a disciplined and consistent Bible reading plan. And not forgetting, get consistent and passionate about prayer and spending time in the presence of God daily!
Below are some suggestions of things we can do to equip ourselves!
Skills that are useful in ministry (and life as well!) : (Feel free to add to the list)
1. Preaching/Teaching (Effective communication skills! Take up a public speaking course!)
2. Singing Ability (To lead worship of course!)
3. Ability to play musical instruments!!!
4. Administrative Skills (Ability to organize… yes yes, my Mama always tells me to keep my room tidy!)
5. Ability to plan games!!!! (Otherwise youth/GK/Teens ministry where got fun!?)
